A standard modular brick is 7-5/8" long by 2-1/4" high. When laid with a 3/8" mortar joint, its nominal modular size becomes exactly 8" x 2-2/3". Calculating bricks without adding mortar joint thickness results in ordering 20% to 25% too many bricks.
Masons often calculate bricks correctly but run out of mortar mix halfway through the job. Standard rules dictate approximately one 80-lb mortar bag per 30-35 modular bricks. Our tool synchronizes mortar and sand requirements directly with your brick count.

The Brick Industry Association (BIA) specifies modular masonry based on a 4-inch modular grid ($M = 4\text{ inches}$). For standard modular bricks (7-5/8" long x 2-1/4" high) with standard 3/8-inch mortar joints, nominal face dimensions are 8" x 2-2/3". This yields approximately 6.75 bricks per square foot for a single-wythe wall. For double-wythe solid walls, you need 13.5 bricks per square foot.
As an industry standard rule of thumb, one 80-pound bag of premixed masonry mortar lays approximately 30 to 35 standard modular bricks with 3/8" joints. Therefore, you need about 3 bags per 100 bricks, or 28 to 33 bags of mortar per 1,000 bricks.
A single wythe wall consists of a single vertical layer of bricks (commonly used as an exterior cladding or veneer over wood/steel studs or concrete block). A double wythe wall consists of two parallel vertical layers of masonry tied together, used in historical load-bearing brick construction.
For standard running bond rectangular walls, add 5% for cutting and breakage. For complex architectural layouts with numerous windows, arches, gable angles, or herringbone patterns, add 10% to 15% extra bricks to ensure uniform kiln batch color consistency.
Type N mortar (medium strength ~750 psi) is the universal standard for exterior and interior non-load-bearing brick veneer and chimneys. Type S mortar (high strength ~1,800 psi) is recommended for below-grade foundations, retaining walls, and high-wind or seismic structural applications.
