For a 12 ft x 16 ft deck using standard 5.5-inch wide boards (5/4x6) with 3/16-inch gaps running along the 16-foot length, you will need 26 rows. That equates to 26 sixteen-foot boards, or 28 to 29 boards when including a recommended 10% cutting and waste allowance.
The nominal 5/4x6 decking board has an actual milled width of 5-1/2 inches (5.5 in) and an actual thickness of 1 inch. When planning deck coverage, add the 1/8" to 1/4" expansion gap between boards to determine effective coverage width.
Under International Residential Code (IRC) standards, standard perpendicular wood decking requires joists spaced 16 inches on-center (O.C.).
