How to Calculate Natural Stone Weight & Crane Rigging Loads

1. Slab and Flagstone Volume

To calculate stone slab weight, multiply surface area by thickness in feet, then multiply by rock density: Volume (cu ft) = Area (sq ft) x (Thickness in inches / 12). For standard 3 cm (1-1/4") granite (~168 lbs/cu ft), slabs weigh approximately 18.5 to 19.5 lbs per square foot.

2. Estimating Landscape Boulder Mass

Because natural landscape boulders are irregular spheroids rather than rectangular boxes, multiplying L x W x H directly overestimates weight by nearly 50%. Instead, apply the ellipsoid shape reduction factor: Boulder Weight ≈ Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Height (ft) x Density x 0.52.

3. Rigging Sling Tension Physics

When lifting stone with a 2-leg bridle sling, tension on each sling leg multiplies as the horizontal angle flattens: Sling Tension = (Weight / 2) / sin(Angle). At 60 degrees, tension is 1.15x half-weight. At 30 degrees, tension doubles to 2.0x half-weight. Riggers must never rig stone below 45 degrees.
