For standard rectangular rooms laid with straight planks or tiles, add 10% extra material to account for end-of-row cut-offs, starter pieces, and minor board defects. For rooms with complex angles, alcoves, multiple doorways, or diagonal 45-degree herringbone layouts, increase your waste allowance to 15% to 20%. For large format porcelain tile (e.g., 24"x24") where cutting mistakes are costly, a minimum 15% waste factor is strongly recommended.

First, calculate your total gross square footage (Room Length × Room Width) and multiply by your waste factor (e.g., 1.10 for 10% waste). Next, check the manufacturer carton packaging for the square footage coverage per box (typically 18 to 24 sq ft per box for luxury vinyl plank or hardwood). Divide the gross square footage by the box coverage and always round UP to the next whole carton. Manufacturers and retailers do not sell partial boxes.

Floating floors such as laminate, engineered hardwood, and luxury vinyl plank (LVP/SPC) expand and contract with seasonal indoor temperature and humidity fluctuations. Leaving a 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch expansion gap between the edge of the flooring planks and all vertical obstacles (drywall, doorframes, and cabinets) prevents the floor from binding, tenting, or buckling. This gap is subsequently covered by baseboards and quarter-round shoe moulding.

To calculate baseboards and quarter-round shoe mouldings, find the perimeter of the room (2 × Length + 2 × Width) and subtract the clear opening width of all doorways. Add 10% to this linear footage for 45-degree miter corner joints and splice cuts. For transition strips (T-mouldings, reducers, or end caps), measure the width of each door threshold where the new flooring meets an adjoining floor covering (typically 32 to 36 inches per doorway).

Underlayment is purchased to cover the net floor square footage plus 5% for seam overlaps and perimeter trimming. Many modern LVP products come with pre-attached acoustic IXPE foam backing, meaning separate foam underlayment is unnecessary; however, installation over concrete slabs still requires a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier film taped with moisture-proof vapor tape to stop moisture vapor emissions from damaging the floor core.
