Plate weight equals Volume multiplied by Material Density: Weight = Length x Width x Thickness x Density. For example, mild carbon steel has a density of 0.2833 lbs/in³ (or 40.8 lbs per square foot per inch of thickness). A 48" x 96" x 0.25" steel plate weighs: 48 x 96 x 0.25 x 0.2833 = 326.36 lbs.
The '40.8 rule' is an industry shortcut: a 1-inch thick carbon steel plate weighs approximately 40.8 pounds per square foot (490 lbs/cu ft / 12 in). For any thickness, simply multiply 40.8 by thickness in inches and area in square feet: Weight = 40.8 x Thickness (in) x Area (sq ft).
Diamond/tread floor plate features raised traction lugs that add approximately 1.5 to 2.0 lbs per square foot of steel over the nominal base plate thickness. For example, a 1/4" smooth steel plate weighs ~10.2 lb/sq ft, while a 1/4" diamond floor plate weighs ~11.25 to 11.75 lb/sq ft.
Aluminum weighs approximately one-third (34.5%) of carbon steel of the exact same dimensions. Aluminum 6061 has a density of ~0.0975 lb/in³ compared to steel's 0.2833 lb/in³. A 4x8 sheet of 1/4" aluminum weighs ~112 lbs, whereas the same steel sheet weighs ~326 lbs.
