AISC Structural Steel Designations & Weight Calculation

1. Reading AISC Designations

Standard American structural steel members encode their nominal depth and weight per linear foot directly into their name: In W8x24, "W" indicates Wide Flange, "8" denotes roughly 8 inches nominal depth, and "24" means it weighs exactly 24.0 pounds per linear foot.

2. Structural Tubing (HSS) Formula

For Hollow Structural Sections (HSS), calculate cross-sectional metal area: Area = 2t(H + W - 2t). Multiply by steel density (0.2833 lbs/in³) and 12 inches to obtain exact weight per foot.

3. Angle Iron (L-Shapes)

Angle iron weight is calculated by summing the two legs and subtracting the overlapping corner thickness: Weight (lbs/ft) = (Leg 1 + Leg 2 - Thickness) x Thickness x 3.40.

4. Crane Rigging Safety Rules

OSHA requires all steel lifting rigging slings, shackles, and spreader beams to be rated with a minimum 5:1 safety factor based on the gross member weight plus connection hardware.
