Subtract all gate opening widths from total perimeter linear footage to get Net Fenced Length. Divide net length by panel width (typically 8 feet or 6 feet): Panels = Net Length / Panel Width. Round up to the nearest whole number to ensure enough material for cut ends.
For a continuous straight line, Total Posts = Panels + 1. For multiple separated sections or yards with corners and gates, calculate Total Posts = Line Posts + Corner Posts + End/Gate Posts. Each gate requires 2 sturdy gate posts.
Standard 5x5 vinyl fence posts set in a 10-inch diameter hole 30 to 36 inches deep require approximately 1.5 to 2 bags (50 lb fast-setting) or 1 to 1.5 bags (80 lb standard) concrete mix per post. Heavy gate posts should have 2 to 3 bags for maximum swing rigidity.
8-foot wide panels require 25% fewer posts and holes to dig compared to 6-foot panels, speeding up installation and lowering post/concrete costs. However, in high-wind regions (gusts >80 mph), 6-foot panels provide greater wind-load resistance and reduced rail sag.
As a rule of thumb, at least 1/3 of the total post length (typically 30 to 36 inches for a 6-foot high privacy fence) should be buried below grade, or down to the local frost line, with 4 to 6 inches of crushed gravel at the base for drainage.
